Reguarding to what the most important development of the 20th century. I would have to say that it is the transistor, which most of the other technologies we take for granted would not exist. So let's give Bell Labs a big vote of thanks for their many innovations that we likely use today...

Ironic to think, but the invention of the transistor was delayed about 35 years by the invention of the vacuum tube. People were tinkering with semiconductors (crystal diodes) in the 20s, but serious research was halted when the tube gained prominence.
There were so many important advances in the 20th century (and 19th century), I wonder if people can keep up the pace in the 21st.

As a physicist in training, I am inclined to mention the unification of magnetism and electricity, and the realization towards the end of the 1800s and in the early 1900s that light is a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. I figure if decoding DNA can be considered a technological advancement, then so can this...Just my $.02
