This photo of a Jeffrey Pine was taken in 1964 in Yosemite NP. It is growing out of solid granite and has been severely twisted by the wind that rakes the top of Sentinal Dome. Half Dome is seen at the far right.

The last time I saw that tree was about four years ago. It died--IIRC--about 10 years ago due to homo sapiens idiota carving into the trunk.

It's a darn shame that complete idiots can destroy what nature, at it's most severe, cannot. At least, I have the photo.
