Well, it was a busy night on Jupiter and the weather did cooperate nicely. Got
the GT mounted up on the ASGT about an hour before Ganymede began its transit
@21:24EST. Watched G and E march to the edge of the planet while taking in views
of the red spot.
The Gran Turismo with TV 2" EBD and DenkII's and SWA15's @137x clearly showed
the red spot detached from the SEB and a hint of shading within. The dark spot
following GRS was easy as well and contrasty. The seeing during this time was
pretty good for Jupiter's low altitude. SEB was split with serrations along the
SEBn from the EZ. Hints of festoons off the NEB into the EZ could just be
detected but seeing started to give way slightly. The NTB had two knots or
barges showing as well, brown/red in color and contrasty. The NPR and SPR were
seen with little to no detail within their structure due to seeing. Colors,
grayish-blue.
I continued to watch as G and E entered the disk, bright against the EZ. Then,
as they progressed across G became dark as a moon shadow and I lost E against
the EZ. I passed behind the planet on schedule and later as seeing improved, E &
G shadows entered the disk. I bumped up to TV11 plossls @ 186x and got great 3-D
views of three dark disks over the EZ, G's shadow the darkest, E's the dimmest
and finally G itself as the middle hue, in that order across the EZ.
I observed until 00:10EST, just shy of I's reappearance due to work in the
morning a few short hours away. All in all a fantastic observing session were
the Gran Turismo performed flawlesly and turned so-so seeing into a great
planetary observing run!
Clear skies,
Tim
