What is more rigid? A Takahashi clamshell or cheap rings/dovetail?

Dmitri,
I use some relatively cheap Vixen rings on my FS102-NSV . They are very rigid. I personally like the look and simplicity of the Tak clamshell, but have not tried one. If they were equal, I'd use the clamshell. I think it would have to be exceedingly well built and engineered to be equal to 2 well spaced rings though.

I've had both, the rings blows the clam shell away. A whole lot less vibrating and bouncing. The clamshell is easier but not better- at least in my case.

I agree with the others that the rings, especially the quality ones, such as the Parallax, are considerably more stable. In most cases the better quality clamshells (Tak, TV, etc.) are fine for visual. Most imaging setups include the high quality rings. Another advantage of the the rings is they do a better job of supporting additional equipment, such as guidescopes and perhaps a Telrad.

I have a Stellarvue clamshell for my 80mm scopes. I find it much preferable to the mounting options standard with these scopes. It has two large thumbscrews to loosen/tighten.

The Celestron scope's paint was damaged by the screws on its original rings.

For larger scopes I reccomend the Parallax rings or similar.
