Transporting my scope - van or trailer.

I am debating between getting a trailer that can hitch to my existing car(once a hitch is added) vs. getting an old minivan that I would use only for astronomy outings. The reason I might go with the van is that the trailer's ride might be too bumpy for my telescope. If I go with a trailer I would definitely get one with a torsion bar, and the mirror would have to come out of the mirror box and ride in its own box in the car to protect it from unnecessary jarring. The third option would buy a new SUV or minivan, but that is the most expensive and gas guzzling way to go.
Below is a picture of my 16" dob.

Have you considered a pickup with a cap?
I've kept scopes in the back of these for many months at a time for years. Bungied down onto foam cradle. Never had a problem.

Lots of folks are using utility trailers.

Get a new Toyota Seinna minivan.

Mine gets around 19 mpg.

I love it!

Well worth the money.

I'm trying to decide the same thing for my NS11. It fits in my trunk, but little else goes in there then. Does anyone use a trailer for their scopes? Robert wants to know about his dob. I need to know if the bouncing or bumping would affect my SCT. I can't take out my mirror like Robert has suggested.

Hi Robert,
I am enjoying my new scopemobile, a Ford Escape Hybrid. ("The third option would buy a new SUV or minivan, but that is the most expensive and gas guzzling way to go.") I'm getting around 30 MPG and I don't drive slow. wink It actually does better in city driving conditions. It'll carry my 14.5" Starmaster easily, plus an 8" SCT and chairs, tables and other accesories. I like it a lot. And I've got a big cargo van for work, which I can leave parked at home now. Heading out on an astronomy road trip with it soon... grin Of course, as they say..."your mileage may vary."
