TeleVue Eyepiece Collection

Hi All,

This is just a hypothetical question, but if you were told you could choose and would be given 4 TeleVue eyepieces of any design and size and one TeleVue barlow that would be the only eyepieces you would have to use for the rest of your observing career regardless of telescope size or type and for lunar, planetary, double star and bright DSO observing, what 4 would you choose? I know there are over 150 eyepiece ads on Astromart because we all buy/sell/trade eyepieces to suit our particular scope and type of objects we wish to observe, but if you had to pick 4 TeleVues to use exclusively from now on no matter what scope you had, what would you choose if you didn't have to pay for them?

I'll play...

TV 2 x Powermate
13 mm Ethos
31 mm T5 Nagler
16 mm T5 Nagler (eye relief maybe too tight for some so you could go 17 T4 but I do like mine)
5 mm T6 ? Nagler or similar(I've never used so this is a bit of a punt for me)...in reality I'd jump over to the Pentax XW for below 10 mm but sticking with TV I' do something like that.

If someone told me that I would tell them that 4 eyepieces plus a barlow is simply not enough and suggest that 6 would be a more appropriate number.

With 6 I think one could choose something around 31mm, 20mm, 13mm, 9mm, 7mm and 5mm and an appropriate 2x shorty barlow and be happy. They could all be Naglers with good results.

In reality, I do almost all my "serious" viewing with a set very similar to this though I have lots of other eyepieces. The problem with the above set would be that some scopes like the RV-6 and the 60mm Asahi-Pentax as well as others do not have 2 inch focusers, a 24mm widefield or a 32mm Plossl is required for those as well as a 20mm 1.25 inch.

31mm
22mm
17mm
12mm
Big Barlow

or

31mm
22mm
13mm Ethos
9mm
Big Barlow

I would chose either of these 2 combos for myself.

It really depends on the telescope.
I have a C14 and rarely use anything with a fl. shorter than 12mm. I got rid of my barlow lens.

For F/5 to F/7 Scopes :
35mm Panoptic
24mm Panoptic
11mm T6 Nagler
5mm Radian
No barlow

31mm t-5
22mm t-4
17mm t-4
12mm t-4 or 13mm Ethos
Televue 2" Big Barlow, but you will probably only use the Barlow occasionally.

This would be a little redundant with some of the focal lengths with the Barlow (22mm=11mm and you have the 12mm). But I think it would give you all the versatility that you would need.

12.5" f/5 dob:

35 Pan (if only just for Veil and N.A. nebs )
24 WF Very comfortable
11 Nagler 6
7 Nagler 6
2x Barlow (parfocal with the Type 6's)
This is what I happen to have, very satisfied.

because this is the "TeleVue Eyepiece Collection" thread grin

I'll bite:

26T5
16T5
13Ethos
9T6
2x barlow (1.25").

26T5/16T5 can be replaced with 31T5/20T5 if you want.

Right now I've got a 35 Panoptic and 17 Nagler. A 31 Nagler would be nice, but I'm very content with what I have. In the lower focal lengths I prefer the comfortable views of the Pentax line, specifically the 10.5 and the 7mm. Toss in an Ultima barlow and a Klee 2.8, and I can get wherever I want to be.
