Plato in shadow

Hi,

A very low sun angle image of Plato.

I intentionally over brightened and processed this image to bring out the
crater floor detail that was hidden by shadow, the extra processing has
created some unavoidable contour lines around the perimeter of the crater.
Note the darker floor at the left end of the crater and if you look close
I think there are a few rills at the lower left, in this lighting the larger
craterlets take on an almost dome like appearance and can you see the Windows
Logo in the shadows at the upper right of the crater smile .
The image has been enlarged 30 percent and may look soft on monitors with
a resolution below 1280x1024.

18" Starmaster Newtonian Reflector, DMK-21F04 Fire camera, 30FPS, stack of
950 frames from 1800.

Thanks,

Wes Higgins

Whoops it appears I lost my first post.
Wes, once again I am amazed by the high quality of your image. The GLR is doing a study of the floor of Plato. I believe this image would be a great help. Would you mind posting it to the GLR "dominilunari" usergroup?
Your image shows the dome against the West wall as mentiioned by Shultz in his book, Moon Morphology". A truly exquisite image. Yahoooo!! grin

The length of the shadows off the nearby mountains is impressive. Imagine standing at the base of those verticals!

The detail you captured is stunning.

An outstanding image, Wes!

Designed for LPOD, you should be very happy with this result, details I have never seen before!

Hi Eric,

Thanks,

I forgot to post the date, the image was taken on 11/05/04, I just got around to
processing it.

Thanks,

Wes Higgins

Wonderful image, Wes! Looks good at 1024x768. What date did you acquire the AVIs? Looks like you've had some good seeing lately.

What causes the ringing at the edges of the shadows? Was it the type of processing?

Hi Wes,

Thats a really interesting image. I've seen very few Plato images at such illumination. I know Paolo did one some time back i think. The long shadows cast across the floor, and the better contrast of some of the elusive floor detail is quite dramatic.

Better late than never on the processing smile
